The Wine Trade
Trading wine between “Old World” and “New World” regions was especially crucial to the beginning of winemaking in America. Early settlers discovered that America’s vast landscape with a variety of climates produced many types of grapes. The grapes native to the original thirteen colonies were much different from the grapes that settlers were used to tasting in their wines; American grapes usually produced sour and highly-acidic wines.
The Violin
The violin is widely considered to be a beautifully expressive instrument. It is indeed a mode of expression for just about every emotion on the human spectrum for modern audiences. Along with its great beauty, the violin has much history to share with respect to American history. It tells the story of various cultures who made their home in the colonies, of political unrest, and of revolution. Songs of victory, defeat, broken hearts, romance, and seasonal celebrations resonated in the taverns, homes, and streets of early America. Thankfully, the act of printing annotated music for dispersion along with lyrics and/or dance steps became popular in the 18th century, and enough have been preserved to provide a glimpse into colonial life.
The Caged Bird Sings
While keeping native birds as pets is now illegal in the United States, by the 19th century birds had become the country’s most popular indoor house pets after their introduction by colonists. Amongst the most sought after was the common canary, followed by the American goldfinch and mockingbird. The history of the domestic songbird in colonial America offers a window into localized aims and anxieties for both the first English settlers and the early American family.
Women In Uniform
Although stories of American women participating directly in combat during the revolutionary period are rare, such instances did occur. Most individuals who lived within the colonies were inspired by the thought of an independent nation apart from their British motherland. These colonists were angry at their government, their lack of representation on legislation that directly affected the colonies, and the thought of paying taxes to a nation that they felt was a foreign entity. With the rise of an independent American Government, many colonists sought to directly participate in the war effort.
The Business of Marriage
In colonial America, the process of courting, and ultimately marriage, was somewhat complex and didn’t always come down to love. In some respects, marriage was more of a business contract among families than a relationship based solely on love. To parents, love was less critical than what could be gained or what they could afford. The latter half of the 18th century and early 19th century saw a massive shift in courtship and marriage, as parents lost much of their influence over the children’s choice of spouse. For much of the 18th century, however, marriage was the elephant in the room for any budding relationship, and parents played a vital role in the decisions made regarding one’s romantic life.
Recreational Winter Sports
18th Century American Colonies had little to offer in terms of recreation and entertainment for various reasons. However, innovation often surpasses even the most difficult of obstacles, leading our ancestors to create ways to entertain themselves. Despite the unimaginable cold and chore filled days, leisure was still an essential component of life, and the colonials found a way to take advantage of what the winter had to offer: ice and snow.

In what feels like the blink of an eye, the year 2023 has come and gone. As the new year approaches, we find ourselves ready to embrace the excitement of the unknown while anticipating new opportunities, new friendships, new knowledge, and new triumphs. Coincidently, we've been finding ourselves looking back, seeking to understand and embrace the traditions that preceded us in 18th Century America.
A Warm Cup Of Cheer
Alcohol was a staple in the eighteenth century and was drunk from rising in the morning to retiring in the evening. While cocktails were still a far-off thought, the colonists enjoyed alcoholic beverages with names such as Posset, Toddy, Flip, and Syllabub. The term eggnog first came into use in 1775. This popular holiday drink has a history that goes back to Medieval Britain, although it has been associated with Christmas since the 1700s.
